What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is considered a capability that enables people to be aware what they experience in the present moment, this includes inner awareness as well as in their environment, with a non-judgemental or trying to change openness and curiosity. We are all mindful some of the time, but we can choose to cultivate and refine our mindfulness through regular practice. Being mindful does not necessarily involve meditation, but for most people this form of mind-training is required to strengthen the intent to stay present and support an open and non-judgemental quality of mind.

Examples of daily mindfulness to try may include eating mindfully – not ravenously, savouring and really tasting your food slowly.

Walking mindfully – counting each step, heel to toe feeling the ground beneath your feet.

Taking mindful pauses throughout your day – creating a clearance, paying attention to what’s happening inside and outside you in the present moment.

Spending time by yourself practicing mindfulness and meditation learning how to support states of relaxation and wellbeing.

Benefits of Meditation

Consciousness is often likened to a stream, shifting, and changing smoothly as it passes over the landscape. Meditation is one deliberate means of changing the course of this stream, and in turn, altering how you perceive and respond to the world around you.

Research has shown that meditation can have both physiological and psychological effects. Some positive physiological effects include a lowered state of physical arousal (high state can cause ‘fight or flight’ response), reduced breathing rate, lowered heart rate, shifts in brain wave patterns, and lowered stress.
